Welcome to my new blog, which is designed to supplement my book Calming the Storm Within: God’s Peace for Depression and Anxiety.
The Word of God featured prominently in my own recovery from depression, and I encourage others to start an “emergency kit” that includes verses and praise songs/hymns that focus on God. So most weekdays, I will post a Verse of the Day. At least once a week I’ll post the lyrics to hymns and praise songs that help me to focus on God. I will also post book reviews on books that have helped me and other resources that will benefit those who struggle with me in our fight against depression.
Each year, I ask the Lord to give me a word from Scripture that will be my focus in my spiritual journey. Since I first started doing this almost 20 years ago, each year has been an adventure as the Lord teaches me more about the word He’s given me. This last year, I chose a word, but a friend wrote me a few days into the new year saying she saw my word for 2014 as “change.” Right.
But it didn’t take too long to see that she was right! Yikes! What a year it was with new challenges on every front. Change isn’t fun for a person who loves to live in a rut. But it sure made me focus on the Lord and His promises, to trust as I’ve never done before.
This year the Lord keeps bringing me to the word “hope.” And this verse keeps coming into my focus through my quiet times in the morning to the challenge from my pastor at our midweek New Year’s service. So it is my theme verse for this year. It is a familiar one.
"For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope." Jeremiah 29:11 NLT
