A Shelter from the Storm by Marjorie Vawter
In A Shelter from the Storm, the second novella in the book, Mildred Zimmerman, a nurse in World War I Europe, returns to Fredericksburg, Texas, which is dealing with an outbreak of Spanish influenza. Nelson Winters, a war hero and new doctor in town, succumbs to the flu and is placed in Mildred’s care at her family’s “Sunday house.” In order for them to have a future together, they must learn to allow God to make them whole.
